Bottom Line
The APMEX Knowledge Center is a mature, 200+ article full-funnel acquisition engine with genuinely strong content architecture and editorial voice. Its weakness is its technical foundation: a vendor-locked Elementor/WordPress/Crocoblock stack with accumulated technical debt, no content discovery features, and a visual design system that hasn't kept pace with the content quality. The rebuild opportunity is significant.

01 Site Architecture & URL Structure
The Knowledge Center is organized as a standalone subdomain (learn.apmex.com) with seven top-level navigation sections plus a Tools section. Navigation uses hand-built WordPress landing pages rather than default CMS category archives - robots.txt explicitly blocks /category/ paths to force readers through APMEX's curated entry points.
URL pattern: /section/subcategory/article-slug/ with pagination at /section/N/ and a 50-state directory at /buying-guide/local-coin-shop-directory/{state}/.
Section 1
APMEX Answers
Q&A database. 200+ entries paginated to at least page 21. Titles mirror how readers search ("What is gold's all-time high?", "What is bullion?").
Section 2
Coin Value Guide
Proprietary coin pricing reference. CoinGrade+ feature covers 5,000+ graded coins with live PCGS/NGC population data synced since 2017.

Section 3
Learning Guides
6 sub-sections: History of Gold & Silver, Science, Bullion, Numismatics, Coin Collecting, International Mints.
/learning-guide/
Section 4
Investing Guide
Organized by metal (Gold, Silver, Platinum) + How-To Guides. 40-50+ articles, paginated to at least page 5.
/investing-guide/
Section 5
Buying Guide
Purchase intent content plus a complete 50-state Local Coin Shop Directory and State Tax Guide (one page per state/territory, templated for local SEO).

Section 6
Selling Guide
Covers active investors and people liquidating inherited jewelry (watches, charms, earrings, silver-plated items). 40-50+ articles.

Section 7
Video Center
193+ videos embedded from YouTube (@apmex, 700+ total uploads, 12,700 subscribers, active since 2007). Displayed via carousel on homepage.

02 Content Strategy & Editorial Voice
The site maps directly to a Learn → Invest → Buy → Sell lifecycle. A reader with zero prior knowledge can enter at Learning Guides, build conviction through the Investing Guide, execute a purchase through the Buying Guide, and eventually liquidate through the Selling Guide. This full-funnel design is deliberate and well-executed.

Editorial tone
Anxiety-aware and reader-direct. Articles consistently acknowledge that precious metals can be intimidating for newcomers, then resolve the anxiety through explanation. Content addresses the reader as "you" throughout.
"An intimidating experience" - how the bullion section opens, before immediately addressing reader concerns.
learn.apmex.com/learning-guide/bullion/
"You'll never have to rely solely on your own Precious Metals knowledge."
learn.apmex.com/learning-guide/science/
"Local shops usually pay less, and they may try intimidating you into accepting a lower price." - the Selling Guide steers readers toward online dealers (APMEX) over local coin shops.
learn.apmex.com/selling-guide/how-to-sell-gold-a-5-step-guide/
"An 1880-S Morgan dollar in MS-66 routinely sells for up to 13 times the value of the same date Silver Dollar in a circulated grade ($260 vs. $20)." - coin grading articles use specific dollar figures to make abstract grading scales concrete.

Homepage search copy
The hero search bar is titled "Ask Us Anything About Gold or Silver" with three example prompts shown inline: "What is gold's all-time high?" / "What is bullion?" / "How do I sell my silver?" These double as SEO signals and UX guidance.
One content consistency gap flagged
Finding
Two separate articles cite conflicting figures for the number of U.S. states that exempt precious metals from sales tax: one says 42, another says 45. Content is not updated in sync across the site - a credibility gap a well-maintained rebuild could exploit.

03 Homepage Layout & Visual Design
The homepage follows a strict stacked-section pattern. Below the navigation, sections run top-to-bottom with no horizontal layout breaks.
1
Live spot price ticker - persistent bar showing real-time Gold, Silver, Platinum, Palladium prices with green/red directional change values + "SHOP NOW" button. The single most explicit signal of the site's commerce-first intent.
2
Dark-navy hero - full-width, ghosted coin photography faded to ~15-25% opacity. Centered wide search bar is the dominant interactive element.
3
5-tile category icon row - custom SVG icons (not icon-font glyphs) for Coin Values, Learn Precious Metals, Investing Guide, Buying Guide, Selling Guide. Coin Values tile carries a "NEW" badge.
4
"Our Latest Answers" carousel - 4 Q&A article cards with left/right navigation. Each card: coin photography thumbnail, question-style bold title, "Read More" link.
5
Numbered step cards - "New to Metals? Get Started Here." Steps 1-4: Why to buy → How much to hold → Which metals → When to buy.
6
Video carousel (1/193) - YouTube embeds navigable via prev/next controls.
7
Promo blocks - Citadel Global Depository Services and Precious Metals IRAs side-by-side. "Learn More" CTAs.
8
"Explore More on APMEX" - 4 tiles cross-linking directly to Gold, Silver, Platinum, and Rare Coins product browsing on apmex.com. All article pages end with this same block.
Color & typography
Dark navy (hero, utility bar)
White (content surfaces)
Gold/amber (primary CTA, accents)
Green (price up)
Red (price down)
Fonts: Manrope (heading, geometric sans-serif), Open Sans, Roboto - all three loaded simultaneously with full weight ranges 100-900. Technical debt from Elementor's asset pipeline.
Photography style
Product-forward only: close-up coin photography, graded coin slabs on warm wood or textured surfaces. No lifestyle imagery, no people. Consistent but limiting.
04 Technical Stack
| Layer | Technology |
| CMS | WordPress 6.4.4 |
| Theme | Hello Elementor v2.6.1 (intentionally minimal, built for Elementor) |
| Page builder | Elementor Pro v3.20.3 - no Bootstrap or Tailwind, entirely Elementor-built |
| Dynamic content | Crocoblock JetEngine v3.3.6 (post listings), JetElements v2.6.16 (carousels), JetTabs v2.1.24 (tabbed content), Ele Custom Skin v3.1.7 (article card templates) |
| Carousels | Swiper.js v8.4.5 (via Elementor) + Slick Slider v1.8.1 (via JetElements) - both loaded in parallel |
| Icons | Font Awesome 5 v5.15.3 (solid + brands + regular) for UI icons; custom SVGs for 5 category tiles |
| CDN | Fastly |
| Bot protection | Cloudflare Bot Management - blocks automated crawlers on homepage and sitemap |
| Analytics | Google Analytics 4 + Google Tag Manager |
| Retargeting | Facebook Pixel, Reddit Ads, Bing Ads, Criteo, Outbrain Sync |
| Accessibility | UserWay widget |
| Search | WordPress native (?s= GET parameter) - no facets, no autocomplete, no dedicated search page |
Technical debt note
The dual carousel library situation (Swiper + Slick loading in parallel) is a legacy-migration artifact increasing page weight. The three-font simultaneous load with full weight ranges is an Elementor pipeline inefficiency. Both are symptomatic of a site that has grown beyond what its original page-builder-based architecture was designed to handle - exactly what Brett described in his email.
Footer & social
6 link columns: Learn Precious Metals, Investing Guide, Buying Guide, Selling Guide, Coin Guide, News and Press Releases. Social icons on 8 platforms: Twitter/X, Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, YouTube, LinkedIn, Pinterest, plus Apple App Store and Google Play Store links. No newsletter signup in the footer.
05 Differentiation Opportunities for the Rebuild
The content architecture and editorial voice are genuine strengths - they should be preserved and modeled, not replaced. What a rebuild delivers is everything the current stack cannot.
-
1
Visual ambition
The dark-navy/white/gold system is functional but conservative. A rebuild can bring a more distinctive precious metals aesthetic - one that feels authoritative and contemporary rather than like a 2019 WordPress theme. The content quality already earns a premium look; the design doesn't match it yet.
-
2
Content credibility infrastructure
No confirmed author bylines, no publish dates, no editorial standards page visible anywhere. As AI-generated content floods the internet, a knowledge center that shows its sources, credits its authors, and dates its updates becomes a trust differentiator. The factual inconsistency we found (42 vs. 45 states for tax exemption) is the kind of thing that erodes that trust quietly.
-
3
Discovery depth
No filter or facet controls on category pages, no confirmed related-content engine, no tagging UI, and search uses only WordPress's default ?s= parameter with no autocomplete or facets. A reader who finishes an article has nowhere to go except back to the shop. A rebuilt site with a proper content graph - related articles, tag pages, reading paths - keeps readers in the knowledge center longer and builds more purchase conviction.
-
4
Interactive depth
6 calculators exist but they live in a siloed /tools/ section. None are surfaced inline within relevant articles (e.g., a Gold Value Calculator embedded inside "How Much Gold Should I Own?"). A rebuild that integrates tools contextually throughout the content journey would outperform a site where tools are an afterthought.
-
5
Performance & sovereign architecture
The Elementor/Crocoblock stack is vendor-locked - every design decision is constrained by what those plugins allow. A custom build hands back full control: component design, animation, interaction design, layout, and performance. Fastly CDN is good infrastructure; the page builder is the bottleneck.
Our take
APMEX has done the hard part: they've built a content taxonomy that maps to real buyer decisions, and an editorial voice that earns reader trust. That's what most knowledge center rebuilds fail at. The opportunity here is to give that content the technical and visual foundation it deserves. We'd preserve the architecture entirely and rebuild the delivery layer.
